History Of Black Star Farms
Sports Valley Farm, a 120-acre equestrian property noted for its opulent red estate home, stables, barns, and outlying paddocks, was bought in 1998 by founding partners Kerm Campbell and Donald Coe. After making the purchase, the partners understood that the farm offered a special chance to build a top-notch winery and agritourism destination that would capture the character of the surrounding landscape and lakeshore.
In honor of the carved star in the marble entryway of the estate house, the land was named Black Star Farms. Plans to construct a winery and hire Lee Lutes as a winemaker was promptly put into motion. Lee, a native of Michigan with previous winemaking experience in Italy, served as the previous winemaker at Peninsula Cellars on the Old Mission peninsula.
Twenty years later, Kerm Campbell has taken over the Suttons Bay farm as the sole owner while continuing to manage the farmers’ relationships in the winery. With a luxury inn, two wineries with adjacent tasting rooms, a distillery, a farm-to-table café, boarding stables, and hiking trails, we have developed into a well-liked Northern Michigan Wine Country destination over the years.
