Location
The location of Taylor is in the Downriver neighborhood of Metropolitan Detroit, which is just east of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, south of Dearborn, north of Monroe, and west of the Detroit River. We like to say “all roads lead to Taylor” because the I-94 and I-75 motorways pass through our community, six miles of Telegraph Road (US-24) are located here, and the Southfield Freeway is only a few blocks away.
History Of Taylor Conservatory
The Taylor Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, one of Downriver’s best-kept secrets, is next to the Petting Farm on the western end of Heritage Park.
The Taylor Conservatory Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose goals include fostering the arts and sciences, protecting the environment, and building lovely public spaces. With its programs created for a variety of social, educational, and environmental requirements, it encourages positive community results. Each summer, it sponsors a hugely popular art and music entertainment in the park that includes some of the top jazz bands in the nation.
The Conservatory is a sculpture that recreates the famous architect Albert Kahn’s historic Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, which was constructed in 1904 for the city of Detroit. Kahn, a fan of classical architecture, based the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Monticello, the mansion of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
For the 1999 DTE Energy International Bloomfest, Michigan’s largest flower display, this replica was commissioned and constructed. DTE Energy gave the building to the City of Taylor for this restoration in 2004. This stunning open-air recreation of the famed conservatory is a true-to-scale model and acts as the distinctive entrance to the gardens.
The conservatory lacks glass panes but serves as the opulent and majestic entry to the botanical gardens and a venue for the public to enjoy 4-season educative displays of annuals and perennials.
There was a late-season groundbreaking ceremony for the conservatory in 2006, and work started in 2007.
