Bill McMachen, one of the original Sea Ray dealers worldwide, and CN Ray, the company’s creator, joined in 1987 to buy undeveloped land next to Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Finding dockage was difficult in the middle of the 1980s as the boating industry was seeing substantial growth.
Bill and CN could have easily constructed ports to satisfy this demand, but their ambition was larger. Being boaters themselves, they knew that the boating experience would be unparalleled if they created a location with amenities and services never before offered in a harbor setting.
Every well had nearby parking, and every dock had adjustable cleats, pump-out capabilities, cable TV, and phone service. Macray was truly unique. The vision continued after that. In order to boost safety and convenience for boaters, extremely broad docks were built at the expense of the potential for more wells.
